Should my business or organization have a website?

Generally speaking, a website is a good thing for an organization to have and most customers and clients expect a professional outfit to have one. It opens your services and products up to a large potential customer base in a manner that is more cost effective than other forms of advertising.

It also allows existing customers greater access to your goods.

What steps should I take before building a site?

Once you've made a decision to build a site, it may be useful to look at the websites of businesses and organization similar to your own.

You also need to think about what it is you want to communicate AND who you are communicating it to which means thinking about your customers.

One mistake many people make is getting ahead of themselves; paying for features they or their target audience may not use. We suggest that you focus on design and content first as the main purpose of any website is to advertise a product or service. As time goes on you may want to talk to your customers or throw up a simple form on your site to get feedback on some features from your target audience on what they feel would be useful.

However, if you notice that the majority of your competitors have a shopping cart for example, that's a pretty good indication that you should probably include this feature from the beginning.

What is a web application?

In the most basic sense, a web application generally refers to a web page that does something other than present static information. Our contact page for example, gets data from a user and puts that information into a database and also sends us an email with the user's message.

An application can be very elaborate or very simple but it always does something in response to an event or trigger.

Is a Database necessary for my website?

It depends . If there are sections of your website that require frequent content changes, if you want your employees to have the ability to update data while on offsite projects, if you want to provide customers with an updated inventory of your products, or if you simply want to keep a record of visitors who use your contact page without any additional data entry then a database may be needed.
